Comparative SLCA thin vs thick client

22 12 2009

This article is to determine a greener computing method for an office environment using comparative Streamlined Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA) of thin client verses thick client. To calculate the positive and negative environmental impact of thin client and think client, the understanding of its concept and fair bit of knowledge about its usability, architecture & few other constraints are must. From a short survey conducted on frequent computer users, I can put this fact with uttermost confidence that “more than 40% don’t have a clue ‘what is thin computing?’ and other “40%  thinks its using LCD thin monitor instead of using traditional CRT monitors with there existing systems”. read more.

Streamlined life cycle assessment matrix

22 12 2009

Let’s start with the questions why there is a need of simplified LCA; because LCA is not something which all medium to small sized companies can afford to do, not only it has to do with cost but also with time, the long await in the result makes its use painful on a frequent basis. As anyone who has attempted to conduct an LCA soon realizes, the methodology can be quite cumbersome, requiring often inaccessible data. In addition LCA is not one of the simplest things which could be understood by person not even remotely relating to LCA. read more.

Life Cycle Assessment of a 3G system at Ericsson

22 12 2009

This article is the presentation of Eco-design strategy Ericsson should pursue to reduce their environmental impact under the development & implementation of UTMS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System).  In simple words, one year of operation of the 3G pilot system is studied. The whole system consists of 3G terminals (i.e. cellular phones), a radio network with radio base stations (RBS) and radio network control equipment, and a core network with switches, routers, servers and workstations. The study also includes transmission equipments like feeders and cables and various site materials like antennas, climate control equipment and site housing. read more

Exact environmental impact of a product

22 12 2009

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is one tool that could be used to get closer to the ideal of sustainable development. LCA itself is the result of the evolution of early “energy analyses” performed by just a few industries in the past. These energy analyses automatically calculated the consumption of raw materials and generation of solid wastes. Later, due to their identical methodology, they were expanded to encompass the computation of global release of pollutants. read more.

Is microchips worth the pollution?

22 12 2009

Can we live without microchips? To answer this question lets peak into our daily life and the easy conclusion which most will reach is “no”, its impossible to paint life with most of the small to medium sized stuff missing from the bed room to the empty box shelves in our kitchen. Not only this, few computer addicts and car lovers will get as close as a heart attack. Not to mention big organisation like NASA and ISRO will go jobless. Therefore, the chance of survival without microchips is far from imagination, next best thing is its awareness amongst the users, minimising pollution and efficient recycling. read more.

Sustainable development

22 12 2009

What is Sustainable development? There are a number of ways in which sustainable development has been defined and redefined in span of time. Nevertheless, the core concept behind remained intact. Sustainable development is use of resources in a pattern that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for future generations read more.
